How To Start a Kitchen Renovation

Throughout the years of being a Kitchen Designer, I have had the pleasure of working with many different types of clients.  However, I would say that the majority of my clients didn’t have a clue where to start with their Kitchen renovation.  That is why they were calling me.  Many of them wanted to start by picking out cabinet colours and looking at granite samples.  For many, that was the fun part.  And I agree,  selecting all of the finishes and materials is fun,  but it isn’t the best place to start.

Whether you are going to tackle the project yourself,  or you are going to hire professionals, you should start the process by asking yourself some questions.  If you use a Kitchen Designer, they will ask you these and other questions so this will help you get prepared for that initial meeting. Take some time to consider the following.

1. How long do you plan on living in the house? 1-3 years? 3-5 years?  5 years or more?

2. If the Kitchen would be greatly improved, would you be willing to make structural changes?

3. What do you dislike about your existing Kitchen?

4. What are you hoping to get out of your new Kitchen?

5. What 3 adjectives would describe the new space?

6. How much are you willing to spend?

Once you answer these questions you will have an idea of the scope of the project and you should be getting a clearer picture of what you want the space to look like.

The next step would be to look at magazines and books to find some pictures of spaces you like.  Start collecting pictures and create a file of ideas and rooms that appeal to you.  You can refer back to this information when you are making colour and material selections.  Show the pictures to your Designer,  if you are using one,  so they can see what kind of style you are interested in. They will help you put it all together to get the room that you want.

Happy renovating!
